SELLING YOUR PORSCHE

Weissach Autohaus will buy your Porsche – it’s fast, it’s easy, and we will immediately pay you the absolute maximum we can.

What is your time worth? If you are planning on selling your Porsche yourself you’ll need to consider what your time is worth because it is probably going to take quite a bit longer to sell your car than you might expect. I like the rule of thumb that says when selling a Porsche privately allow 1 month for each $10,000 of value.  If you are selling a 911 3.2 worth about $20,000, for example, plan on it taking you two months to sell. A $70,000 turbo? Yep, ‘fraid so.

We are finding that an increasing number of Porsche sellers are asking Weissach Autohaus to purchase their car rather than attempting to sell it on their own. These sellers know that their time is worth more than the months it’s going to take to sell. Not to mention the aggravation of buyers who never show, the ones who say they’ll call back and don’t, and of course, the “wouldjatakes” (“would you take half of your asking price?”).

What is the Retail Market Value of your Porsche?  As tough as this is to hear, your Porsche is worth what the market says that year and mileage will bring.  And I’m afraid to report that most of the options that were purchased when the car was new and much of the maintenance and service work that was done has little effect on the car’s present value.  Options help sell the car but don’t really change the value much, if at all. I also would not put too much credence in the Kelley Blue Books and NADA references. I can't speak for other makes and models but they sure don't seem to reflect any relevant pricing when it comes to most Porsche cars.

One of the best ways to check market pricing of your car is to visit Cars.com or Autotrader.com and see what the dealers are asking for similar cars with similar mileage. Dealers are in business to sell cars and they will usually price realistically. You can largely ignore what the private sellers are asking because those cars are usually priced with too much emotional tie to the vehicle. Try not to assume that the highest price asked by a dealer is the correct market price since dealers can be crazy at times, too.  Look for a price somewhere in the middle and keep in mind that this is the “asking price” - the actual sell price will be a few thousand dollars less. The result of all this is the potential retail market value of your Porsche if it was to be sold by a dealer. A private seller would usually struggle to sell the car at that same price since most prospective buyers would rather purchase an expensive item like a Porsche from a dealer.

Here’s how we buy your Porsche: Call us and tell us about your car in detail. We will then do a little research and determine what we think we could sell it for, based on our estimate of retail market value. We then subtract out the costs that we invariably put into it, subtract out a set-aside for our potential warranty costs and finally subtract out the profit we would like to earn. The balance is the price we can pay for your car as described. If this price sounds reasonable to the seller we then ask to have the car brought in to our service center for an inspection, a test drive and a Carfax check, all done in about an hour. When all that is sorted we pay you by certified bank check and we are done - except that now you no longer have a Porsche and you should immediately start planning your next purchase of one!

Will Weissach sell my Porsche on consignment? In short, “no.” Dan and I decided from the start that we had to be able to control the quality of the car that we were selling and we just can’t do that with consignment selling.  And we certainly can’t put a Weissach warranty on a consignment car. Selling your Porsche on consignment may sound attractive as someone dangles a big juicy (and unrealistic) selling price but you will likely lose access to your car for three to six months, make the commitment that even if you sell the car the consignor gets a cut and still have no guarantee that it’s going to sell. Six months later you could be in the exact same spot as before.

Realistically, only selling your car to a dealer puts the cash in your pocket immediately.

In the end, it’s all about being fair to the seller. You may not be overwhelmed hearing a wholesale price for your Porsche but we won't tell you one price on the phone only to get you to bring the car down and then drop the price That's bad business for both of us. We commit to working very hard to pay as much as we can for your car.........and still be able to keep our doors open.
